The master's degree in Micro and Nano Systems Technology is a two-year study program that is interdisciplinary with elements from electronics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, mathematics, modeling, and process technology. The aim of the study is to qualify successful candidates for a working environment in the diverse Micro and Nano Systems Technology; in industry as well as in academia, research institutions and governmental agencies. The studies cover the entire production chain, including design, manufacturing and characterization of micro and nano systems.

The basis of the study program is the corresponding research community at Vestfold University College, that constitutes one of the three intellectual junctions for Norway’s efforts in micro- and nanotechnology, with extended collaboration with industry, academia and research institutions; regionally, nationally and internationally. We have good laboratory facilities and spacious, clean rooms, as well as established collaboration with industries that focus on research and development.

The study program has an international profile and English as the language of instruction.

Plan of study

Career Opportunities

Look out for a micro helicopter, as tiny as a bee.As micro- and nanotechnology is employed within a broad spectrum of areas, there is also great variation in the jobopportunities. Medical instrumentation, communication, energy and environmental technology, biotechnology, aerospace technology, oil and gas extraction, are some of the branches seeking people with a Master degree within Micro and nano systems technology. In Norway, there are more than thirty companies and research communities that are active in this area. It is expected that the industry will have considerable growth within this field.

Typical jobs:

  • Within companies developing and producing microelectronic and micro- and nanosystems:
    • Product development
    • Production technology development
    •  Production management
    • Quality management
    • Project leader
  • Within companies working with micro- and nanotechnology:
    • Business development
    • Marketing and sales
    • Project leader
  • At universities or research institutions:
    • Research and development
    • Technical consultation
  • PhD

Study specialists

The study program is technical wide and gives you the possibility to customize your own education. We offer four tracks of specialization (depending on the number of students on each track):

  • BioMEMS: micro- and nanotechnology for biological systems
  • Micro/ nano design: sensor and actuator technology
  • Micro/ nano fabrication: fabrication, integration and packagingtechnology
  • Electronics for micro and nano systems

The specialization implies 20 ECTS taught courses and 40 ECTS final project within the selected specialization.

An important part of the study is the final project which is strongly connected to the ongoing research at the Institute of Micro and Nano Systems Technology. It is also possible to work on the final project in close cooperation with one of the companies we collaborate with. Vestfold has companies that are international leaders and active within micro- and nanotechnology areas.

Study abroad?

Micro- and nanotechnology is an international field of research. The master's degree program has an international character, with students and teachers that come from many countries. Furthermore, students on the master program are encouraged to gain international experience by pursuing part of their study abroad. This may be the final project (the whole project or parts of it), or individual subjects. An international exchange should primarily take place in the second (last) year of study.

We collaborate with research communities both within Norway and abroad (Europe, USA and Asia). The collaborating institutions include, among others, Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center (BSAC) at the University of California at Berkeley (USA), Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, UK), Xiamen University (China). This makes it possible for you, as a master's degree student, to take parts of the study program at this world-leading centre within micro- and nanotechnology.

Post degree studies

Post degree studies
The graduate students will achieve a sound foundation for further doctoral degree studies (PhD) at Vestfold University College or at other universities anywhere in the world.
