Norway is one of the leading countries in the application of the guidelines set by the Bologna Process in European higher education. The degree system based on the bachelor's, master's and Ph.d. structure has been successfully implemented, together with the ECTS credits system. By adapting to the European standard in higher education have made it easy for Norwegian institutions to obtain recognition of their qualifications in other countries.

Credit System and Grading Scale

Courses are measured in credit units corresponding to the ECTS standard. Grades for undergraduate and graduate examinations are awarded according to a graded scale from A (highest) to F (fail), with E as the minimum passing grade. A pass/fail mark is given for some examinations.

Diploma Supplement

All graduates from Vestfold University College will automatically free of charge receive a Diploma, a Transcript of Records and a Diploma Supplement.Diploma Supplement is being issued in a widely spoken European language, given automatically and free of charge to every student upon graduation. The intention of the Diploma Supplement is to give information about the study program and degree and thus create greater transparency for international purposes.

See an example of a Diploma Supplement here.

The Diploma Supplement is based on a model developed on the initiative of  the European Commision, the Council of Europe and UNESCO/CEPES. The intention of the Diploma Supplement is to give information about the study programme and degree and thus create greater transparency for international purpose.

For further information about historical background, goals and implementation in Norway see:
NOKUT. For questions concerning the Diploma Supplement, please contact your faculty.

Teaching and Examination

Teaching is carried out in various forms, such as lectures, seminars, group work, laboratory work and independent studies. The teaching emphasizes the student’s responsibility and individual performance, and the grades obtained generally reflect the entire participation in the course, not only the final examination.

Academic Culture

The relation between students and teachers can be described as informal. Students do not use their teachers’ titles, and they are also encouraged to ask questions both in and out of the classroom, as well as comment on things they disagree with. The dress code is informal.
