English is the global language and we meet it everywhere: in education, at work and in our spare time. It's hard to imagine any area of life where a good knowledge of English isn't really useful. We offer four 15 ECTS courses

We offer English modules in language, literature and cultural studies. Studying with us will enable you to develop your oral and writing skills and provide you with the knowledge to participate in today's global society.
 

  • Offered: Fall and/or spring semester
  • Level: Undergraduate
  • ECTS: 4 courses each 15 ECTS
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Admission deadline: Fall: 15th of May,  Spring: 15th of November

About the courses

Language and Communication (15 ECTS) Fall semester
This module will give students the opportunity to develop their practical language skills and their formal knowledge of English.

  • Basic phonetics. There is an emphasis on aspects of speech that are problematic for Norwegians
  • Basic grammar, with a focus on the differences between English and Norwegian
  • Varieties of English and the link between language and culture
  • A study of text and genre, based on examples of written and oral texts
  • Cultural Studies (1)

 

Literature and Culture (15 ECTS) Fall semester
This module will enable students to develop their English and their knowledge of central texts from the English speaking world.

  • A selection of texts from the cultures and societies of the English-speaking world
  • Central literary works
  • Textual structures and linguistic devices
  • Genre study and norms for academic text production

 

History and Society (15 ECTS) Spring semester
This module will enable students to improve their ability to communicate in English and to develop insights into aspects of culture, history and society in the English-speaking world.

  • Central aspects of the history and societies of the English-speaking world; there will be a focus on the UK and USA
  • A selection of literary and non-literary text genres
  • Oral and written texts - what characterizes a good text?
     

Literature and Film (15 ECTS) Spring semester
This module will enable students to improve their ability to communicate in English and to gain insights into literature and film from the English speaking world.

  • From text to film; the adaption process
  • Genre analysis
  • Conceptual and analytical tools in the discussion of film and literature
  • Narrativity in film and literature

 

Target groups

Students of language, literature, liberal arts  or other students with an interest in English. 

Prerequisites

All teaching is in English and students are expected to make an active contribution. Thus, an intermediate/advanced proficiency in the language is a requirement.
