Live@edu service for students

Sist oppdatert 23.03.2011 av Svein Morten Rougnø

VUC use the Microsoft Live@edu service. This service includes email, calendar, storage, chat, and more.

Microsoft Live@edu

Monday March 15th 2010 VUC started using a new email system for our students. We changed from Novell NetMail, an email system we introduced the fall of 2006, to Microsoft Live@edu.

For the users this meant more functionality and also more storage space. The only limit which decreased was the limit for the attachment size. Novell NetMail was configured to accept attachments of a total of 40MB per email. In Live@edu this limit is 25MB.

Which changes does this imply for the individual student?

  • To start using Microsoft Live@edu one has to do a few things. These are described below..
  • One thing which might seem as a step backward from the idea of one username and password to all IT-services at HiVE is that Live@edu uses a different set of usernames and passwords. However, we think the advantages of switching to Live@edu more than compensates for this.

About Live@edu

Microsoft Live@edu is much the same as the regular Windows Live services which can be used by anyone. Here are some main characteristics about Live@edu:

  • The email system is Microsoft Office Outlook Live (not Hotmail), and you have 10GB of storage space for emails.
  • Windows Live Messenger. One can use one's Live@edu username and password to log in to Windows Live Messenger, add other HiVE students to your contact list, chat or have a video conversation with them.
  • The Address book contains all the students at HiVE.
  • A Calendar. You can also create new calendars, and share calendars with others.
  • SkyDrive. In SkyDrive you have 25GB of password protected storage space for your files. You can access your files from anywhere there's Internet access. You can also share files with other students.
  • Groups. You can greate Groups, for example to work toghether on a project. A new web space is created for the group, with its own emailbox, calendar, forum, image folder, storage space, and one can have a group chat with Microsoft Live Messenger.

How to start using Live@edu

Username and password

The password you need to log on to your Live@edu account is not the same as the other IT services at HiVe.

You can find your Live@edu username and password like this:

(You only need to to this once.)

  1. Start your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox or other browsers)
  2. Go to http://live-edu.hive.no/ and log in using your local Feide username and password
  3. Take a note of what is your Email address and Live Password. The Email address you should recognize. This is your email address at HiVE, which you had from before. The Live Password is a password that has been generated for you. (We would have liked for this to be the same as your Feide password, but unfortunately this is not possible.)

IMPORTANT! There is no password synchronisation between your Feide password and your Live@edu password. Thus, you need to maintain two password. You still need to use your local Feide username and password to log on to the other IT services at HiVE. Your email address and Live password is only to be used to log on to the Live@edu system.

Logging on to the Live@edu service

To log on to Live@edu, do this:

  1. Start your browser
  2. Go to http://outlook.com/student.hive.no
  3. Log on:
    • Windows Live ID: Enter your complete Email address (see #3 under Username and password, above).
    • Password: Live Password (see #3 under Username and password, above).

User support

Live@edu is already used by many universities and colleges around the world. Microsoft has thus created a number of help pages already. After you log in to http://outlook.com/student.hive.no you can click on the question mark icon on the top right side on the page, to enter the help pages.
