A Norwegian Cultural Journey

Sist oppdatert 11.04.2012 av Siri Bjørnstad

A Norwegian Cultural Journey takes Norwegian culture as a point of departure. As important as the Norwegian culture is the comparison with the various cultures the students represent. The course consists of three modules.

  • Offered: Fall semester
  • Level: Undergraduate
  • Duration: one semester, full time
  • ECTS: 30 (approximately 12 -15 US credit hours)
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Admission deadline: 15th of May
  • Contact: Sigurd Kraft Gulbrandsen, e-mail: sigurd.gulbrandsen@hive.no

About the Course

  • In module 1 the students learn about contemporary cultural and social life in Norway through activities in music, dance, outdoor life, food and traditions
  • In module 2 the students study elements of cultural development in Norway and Northern Europe from the Viking age until 1950
  • In module 3 the students work with cultural expressions in modern Norway
  • School practice: A part of the course is a two week experience where the students can both study the Norwegian education system in practice, and teach themselves. The students may visit kindergarten, primary, secondary or upper secondary schools according to their own interests

The method of working includes academic lectures, group discussions, practical performances and meetings with local artists, performers and chefs. In addition to books and articles, music, dances and food recipes are on the curriculum! Important works in literature, film, music and art will be presented and discussed in addition to topics from language, history and education.
