Outdoor Education and Experiental Learning

Would you like to learn more about Norwegian outdoor culture and practical skills of outdoor life, experience outdoor life in a variety of environments in the local area of Vestfold and its surroundings: the coastline, the forests and the lakes? Would you like to participate in activities connected to our local history and craftsmanship, learn methods of experiential-based learning, and learn basic Nordic skiing traditions? Are you interested in learning about sustainable development and ecophilosophy? Come to Norway and study our course in Outdoor Education and Experiential Learning!

  • Offered: Spring semester
  • Level: Undergraduate
  • Duration: one semester, full time,study
  • ECTS: 30 (approximately 15 US credit hours)  consisting of 3 modules of 10 ECTS each
  • Language of instruction: English

About the Course

The course consists of three modules within culture, nature and arts and crafts. There will be contributions from five different disciplines to the course. Not all disciplines will be represented with a 10 ECTS module each time the course runs.

Norwegian Outdoors and ecophilosophy, mountains, forests and coastline  -10 ECTS

  • learn more about Norwegian outdoor culture and practical skills of outdoor life
  • experience outdoor life in a variety of environments in the local area of Vestfold and its surroundings: the coastline, the forests and the lakes

Aestetic module - art and crafts -10 ECTS

The students will develop understanding how embodies experiences with materials contribute to learning. Through pracitical approach they will experience how materials' affordances and resistance challenge them to think in new ways and to get familiar with own aesthetic learning process. These insights, togheter with theoretical knowledge, will on one hand help them understand the importance of crafing for human survival, and on the other hand help them develop ecological attitude towards nature.

Norwegian outdoors, nature, culture and experience based learning in the outdoors -10 ECTS.

In this module students acquire knowledge and understanding of Norwegian outdoors and outdoor activities in a historical and contemporary perspective.  It will focus on practical skills and experience-based learning of outdoor activities. The course also aims to establish contrasting perspectives on the topics raised and to increase the students' competence in comparing the practice of outdoor activities of Norway with the cultures of their home countries. This will make it possible to discuss similarities and dissimilarities between the known and the unknown, and to arrange professional encounters between the different cultures that the students represent. 

The Target Groups

Preschool teacher students, teacher students, other students with interest in Norwegian culture and nature and experience- based learning. 

Prerequisites

Foreign students who have finished a minimum of one year of studies from university or university college (60 ECTS) in their home countriesand Norwegian students. A certain proficiency in English is required in order to benefit from the course.
