Most of the Norwegians speak English quite well. But to get the most out of your stay with us it might be a good idea to learn some basic words to start with.

Some Useful Words to Know in Norwegian:

Abbreviations on Campus

You will come across many abbreviations and Norwegian names at the school. Here are some:

HVE – Høgskolen i Vestfold – Vestfold University College (VUC)

HE – Fakultet for helsevitenskap – Faculty of Health Sciences

HUT – Fakultet for  Humaniora og utdanningsvitenskap – Faculty of Humanities and Education

TEKMAR - Fakultet for teknologi og maritime fag – Faculty of Technology and Maritime Sciences

ØS – Fakultet for økonomi og samfunnsvitenskap – Faculty of Business and Social Sciences

SIV – Samskipnaden i Vestfold – Student Welfare Organisation in Vestfold (SIV is also an abbreviation for the county’s central hospital) VS – Vestfold Studentsamfunn – The Student Society

    As examinations require a flat room (not an auditorium), some of our exams are scheduled outside the campus at times. You will find information and maps about these locations here.

  • Student ID Card

    All students should have a student ID card. Student ID cards are issued on the first day of the semester. You must pay the semester fee and register for the semester. Note: all exchange students are exempt from paying the semester fee, but they must be registered.

  • Norwegian Social Security Number

    If you are staying more than six months in Norway you need to apply for a Norwegian social security number.
