Residence Permit for Study Purposes

Sist oppdatert 26.03.2012 av Maija Heinilä

Here is some information about immigration procedures. The routines and rules vary according to where you come from, and whether you are entering Norway as an exchange student or as a degree seeking student.

Important web site: www.udi.no (Directorate of Immigration). Download a Fact Sheet here.

Students from Nordic Countries

If you are a citizen of another Nordic country (Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland) you do not need a visa or permit for educational purposes to study at Vestfold University College.

Students from EU/EAA Countries

EEA nationals do not need to apply for residence permits. As of 1 October, EEA nationals no longer need to apply for residence permits in Norway. It is sufficient that they register on the web pages at udi.no and at the local police station upon arrival. NOTE: It is only the police station in Tønsberg that handles residence permits. The address is Baglergaten 2, 3111Tønsberg

Other International Students

You will need both visa and permit for educational purposes.
When you have been accepted to Vestfold University College, contact your nearest Norwegian Embassy or Consulate to check what you need to obtain a visa or permit to enter Norway.

Residence Permit for Study Purposes

When you apply for a residence permit for educational purposes, the Norwegian Embassy or Consulate will, at a minimum, require the following documents:

  •  Letter of Acceptance issued by Vestfold  University College.
  •  For non-EU/EEA students: a proof of financial funds sufficient to support oneself during the stay at the Norwegian institution. For the academic year 2012/2013, the self-financing students must have a minimum of NOK 92 500 per year of study. The way to do this is to transfer NOK 92 500 to a bank account we establish in your name in Norway. Students can use the Student Welfare Organization's deposit account. Information will be given along with the letter of acceptance.
  •  Confirmation of housing (which VUC provides in the Letter of Admission)
  • To apply for a visa/or permit, you will also need to document the purchase of a travel insurance with medical coverage. More information about immigration procedures: www.udi.no.  Students who need visas are advised to apply as soon as possible after acceptance at Vestfold  University College as the process might  take up to four months.
  • NOTE: do not choose the option of asking Vestfold University College for referal in your E-application. This will just delay your permit.
  • Use the address given in your Letter of Admission for your Norwegian residence. And use the organization number as well.
  • You will need to report at the Tønsberg Police Station within 7 days of arrival. Kindly take your passport, Letter of Admission and your Norwegian address with you.

NOTE: It is only the police station in Tønsberg that handles residence permits. The address is Baglergaten 2, 3111Tønsberg

Family Reunification

The new immigration act gives stricter rules for family immigration for citizens outside EU/EAA. Read more here.

The new Act introduces new criteria for granting family immigration permits. These are stricter requirements for assured subsistence (financial support) and a requirement of four years of work experience and/or education in Norway in order to be granted family immigration permits.

In family immigration cases, the main rule is that the person living in Norway must be able to document a sufficient income the year before he or she wishes to bring his/her family to Norway, and he/she must also be able to prove that he/she will have sufficient income the following year. In addition, a new requirement is introduced stating that the reference person in Norway, as a main rule, must not have received social security benefits in the past year.

The main rule is further that family immigration permits will not be granted, unless the reference person has worked or studied in Norway for four years.
  • Working While Studying

    07.07.2009

As a full time, degree-seeking student, you are normally granted a part-time work permit with the first time residence permit. This permit allows you to work up to 20 hours per week, and full-time employment during ordinary holidays.

  • Norwegian Social Security Number

    23.03.2009

If you are staying more than six months in Norway you need to apply for a Norwegian social security number.
