Student Housing

Sist oppdatert 28.07.2011 av Maija Heinilä

As an international student we help you to find accomodation if you apply within deadlines. You need to apply for room directly (web based application form) even if you haven't yet received your Letter of Admission. The earlier you apply, the more secure you are of getting a room.

The Student Welfare Organisation (SIV) runs seven student housing areas in and around Tønsberg and Horten, providing accommodation for some 300 students. Most of the accommodation consists of single rooms, some of which shared bathrooms and kitchens. Others have kitchenettes. We have also 30 flats. Rent varies from NOK 2 100 - NOK 6 100 per month, depending on the apartments/room standard and size.

How to Apply

It is important that you submit the application for housing through our website sivbolig.no  as early as possible.

We have unfortunately not housing for all who want housing through  SIV.Rooms will only be given to those who submit the application through our website. You will be placed on the waitinglist according to the date the application was submitted.

If you are an ISEP student, Erasmus or a Quota student, please indicate so in the web based application form!

Kindly refer to these pages for more housing information:SIV Housing

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Karin Gulliksen at the housing department: Karin. Gulliksen@hive.no. Phone: 00 47 3303 79 00

Monthly Rent

You will have to sign a housing contract upon arrival. In this contract you will find the name and address of your accommodation. There are a few things that you should be aware of about the payment:

  • The rent is to be paid by the 15th of every month.
  • You must pay for half of the month in advance. Invoices are sent to every tenant.
  • You can either pay the invoices by transferring money from your bank account, or pay with your credit/debit card, or in cash at the housing office at Gannestadveien 2
  • The first rent must be paid before arrival or in cash when you collect the key.

Moving Out Earlier than Agreed?

Remember, there is a two-month notice.

Moving Out for the Summer?

The housing guarantee for international students does not apply for tenants giving up their apartments for the summer vacation. You might find it difficult to get a student apartment/room when you come back in the fall.

Coping with Housemates

It is always a challenge trying to adapt to new housemates, but it might be even harder when you are from a different culture, so here are a few things to think about:

  • Do your dishes every day, clean the cooker after you have used it.
  • Make sure that the toilet is clean.
  • Clean the apartment once a week (using hot water and soap).
  • Whether it is cleaning supplies, toilet paper, food, kitchenware, etc, always ask if you may borrow other students´ property.
