University College of Vestfold is offering the maritime management master program as two specializations in parallel, one commercial and one technical specialization. As indicated by the program title the study is addressing students aiming towards management types of jobs. Management and leadership skills are addressed as specific courses within the program. In addition, there is a strong emphasis for the candidates to acquire a broad basis of knowledge and understanding of the important basic subjects applicable for the maritime industry. Special attention is given to topics with high priority within the industry, in particular related to improvement of safety and environmental performance and renewal of the industry though innovations.
The philosophy of offering two specializations is to benefit from close interaction between the main trades. Several of the courses are actually given as common courses for both specializations. In addition, there are various common group-related assignments for all the students. This will contribute in stimulating mutual understanding and cooperation between students coming from either a technical or economical background.
The program has an international profile. English is the language for all lecturing and assignments. Master of science in Maritime Management is a 120 ECTS credits program. The duration of the program is two years full-time study, including master thesis during final semester. An overview of the courses is given below:

The maritime industry, both in Norway and internationally, offers a great variety of jobs for candidates with a master degree in maritime management. The graduate candidates from the management program shall be attractive for a wide range of companies such as ship owners, commercial management companies, financial institutions, insurance companies, shipping brokers, transportation and logistics companies, maritime equipment suppliers, shipbuilding and repair companies, engineering and contractor companies.
The program has one elective course intended for specialization. However, specialisation for each individual candidate will in particular be related to the selection of theme and context for the master thesis. Emphasis is given within the program to encourage and facilitate execution of the master thesis work in close cooperation with local companies within the maritime industry. There is a wide variety of such companies within the geographical circumference of the University College of Vestfold, including the Oslo area.
Basically, the program is not including any study abroad. However, on an individual basis it is possible for the students, in agreement with the faculty, to exchange certain of the courses with similar courses at other recognized educational institutions.
The graduate students will achieve a sound foundation for further doctoral degree studies (PhD) at other universities all over the world.

For Norwegian students with Norwegian educational background application deadline is 15. April 2012.
For Norwegian students with international educational background application deadline is 1. March 2012
Reservation of places:
50% of the places in the study program are reserved for applicants with a Norwegian bachelor degree.
Admission to Master in Maritime Management with specialization in Maritime Commercial Management:
Admission to Master of Science in Maritime Management with specialization Maritime Commercial Management, requires either (i) three year bachelor degree in business administration or (ii) three year maritime bachelor degree in shipping and logistics or (iii) corresponding education
Alternatively, a work-integrated educational program at bachelor level may qualify for admission provided that it contains minimum 120 ETCS credits specifically relevant for the program.
For admission to the program it is required that the applicant has completed the qualifying bachelor degree with an average grade level of C or better.
Admission to Master in Maritime Management with specialization in MaritimeTechnical Management:
Admission to Master of Science in Maritime Management with specialization Maritime Technical Management, requires either (i) three year bachelor degree in engineering or (ii) three year maritime bachelor degree in nautical or machinery or (iii) corresponding education
Alternatively, a work-integrated educational program at bachelor level may qualify for admission provided that it contains minimum 120 ETCS credits specifically relevant for the program.
For admission to the program it is required that the applicant has completed the qualifying bachelor degree with an average grade level of C or better.
